چکیده

A grouping or blocking of observations can be achieved by using categorical or dummy variables. Examples of categorical variables include gender, country of origin, job title and experimental treatment. This should be contrasted with ordinal variables, such as age class, highest degree attained or a score on a 5-point scale with values comprised between strongly agree and strongly disagree. The matrix X is usually referred to as the design matrix, because it specifies the experimental design. For instance, if considering a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) over three different groups, where we have 2 subjects in each group. We may select one of the following two design matrices,

Effects of a DVD-delivered exercise program on patterns of sedentary behavior in older adults: a randomized controlled trial☆☆☆

INTRODUCTION In the present study, we examined the influence of a home-based, DVD-delivered exercise intervention on daily sedentary time and breaks in sedentary time in older adults. METHODS Between 2010 and 2012, older adults (i.e., aged 65 or older) residing in Illinois (N = 307) were randomized into a 6-month home-based, DVD-delivered exercise program (i.e., FlexToBa; FTB) or a waitlist c...

Adjusting sample size for anticipated dropouts in clinical trials.

Statistical models for calculating sample sizes for controlled clinical trials often fail to take into account the negative impact that dropouts have on the power of intent-to-treat analyses. Empirically defined dropout correction coefficients are proposed to adjust sample sizes for endpoint analysis of variance (ANOVA) and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) that have been initially calculated ass...

Robust Statistical Methods: The R Package WRS2

In this manuscript we present various robust statistical methods and show how to apply them in R using the WRS2 package. We elaborate on robust location measures and present robust t-test versions for independent and dependent samples. We focus on robust one-way and higher order ANOVA strategies including mixed designs (“betweenwithin subjects”). Finally, we elaborate on running interval smooth...

Syntactic Priming As a Test of Argument Structure: A Self-paced Reading Experiment

Using data from a behavioral structural priming experiment, we test two competing theoretical approaches to argument structure, which attribute different configurations to (in)transitive structures. These approaches make different claims about the relationship between unergatives and transitive structures selecting either a DP complement or a small clause complement in structurally unambiguous ...

Robust Statistical Methods in R Using the WRS2 Package

In this manuscript we present various robust statistical methods popular in the social sciences, and show how to apply them in R using the WRS2 package available on CRAN. We elaborate on robust location measures, and present robust t-test and ANOVA versions for independent and dependent samples, including quantile ANOVA. Furthermore, we present on running interval smoothers as used in robust AN...
